HI there,

I hope somebody can help I work full time 40 hours and just had to take a pay cut in my job and my wife is a self employed chilminder my question is this:

I understand i can inform the tax office regaring my reduction in wages so hopefully a bit more working tax credit and child tax credit?

My wife is a self employed childminder but has not actualy had any work for the last 12 months,

Can my wife claim unemployment benefit whilst still advertising as a self employed childminder

Thanks in advance

You are correct in so much that the payments should increase. Your wife cannot claim JSA whilst self employed and any claim would be income based and your income would be taken into account meaning she'd get nothing. In addition to that, she'd still have to jump through all the jobfinding hoops someone getting paid JSA would get. I was in the wierd situation of being £20 a month worse off signing on JSA as I didn't get anything due to wife's income but had to pay petrol to do a 30 mile round trip twice a month to sign on.
