MBNA late payment.

What an idiot. Did a 0% balance transfer to MBNA and it looks like my first payment by cheque may be late. No excuses, my fault.

Money due tomorrow. My wife has Internet and phone banking and is attempting to make a faster payment today. Does this transaction generally succeed? Would MBNA accept a grovelling apology if not?

My only other option would be to balance transfer back to Barclaycard. Would they be likely to accept a switch back so quickly?

Many thanks for any ideas.

Occasionally will accept a grovelling apology - worth a try.

  • If you pay through your personal bank account it should clear today. Mine does. If that fails phone them and explain and they will take your payment over the phone. Hope this is of help.

Does it? The statement says allow up to 4 days. I posted a cheque and my wife did a standard BACS transfer from her Internet account on the 27th and neither have shown up yet. She is currently attempting a faster payment via her phone bank today. My current account is not set up for phone or Internet banking.

Hmmm. Her Internet account say they don't do faster payments yet. Her phone bank only do faster payments within the bank from one account to another.

However, the BACS transfer she did Thursday night went out one minute past midnight on Friday morning, with Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday (due date) making four days. She thinks the money will be there tomorrow.

    Squeaky bum time?

The only other option I can think of is a payment from my cleared Barclaycard. Could this be done to clear immediately?

I pay by debit card (Nationwide) on the MBNA website. Goes through the next day, though it's usually a day after that before I see it when I check online.

(ie if I paid today Wednesday, then it might not show up on the account until Friday, but it would be shown has having been received Thursday).

So perhaps you can try this method in addition to any others. Looks like you'll still make it - I don't know if there is a cut-off time, so get your skates on!

If you do a faster payment by 4pm today it will clear today....Has the account been opened within the last 3 months? if so chances are you will be able to phone them and they can help. If you do definitely get them to set up a Direct Debit for the min, you can still pay more off but this means you wont lose the Promotional rate again as if it happens agains chances are they wont be so kind.

Thanks. I have a Nationwide debit card, so registered online with MBNA and made the minimum payment. So with the cheque and my wife's payment there are three chances of meeting the deadline. Won't rest easy until I know it has gone through.

Minimum repayment direct debit would avoid you worrying about this every month - just be sure to check your statements to confirm when they will take the DD payment and to ensure you have sufficient cleared funds each month. When setting up a DD they don't always set it up in time for the "next" statement so you might need to do one more manual payment before the DD kicks in - as always, check your statement to confirm.

Yeah, the zero per cent only lasts until November so wasn't keen on a short term direct debit. I'm normally incredibly efficient and well organised about such things, so can't really explain why I just forgot and left it. I think this shock means I will never mess it up again.

All payments received to MBNA accounts will not show on-line, until the account gets
updated the next day (which means around midnight or slightly earlier).

The credit will have been booked with the date of the previous day.
