If I put the printer next to the router, does that mean it does not need to be wireless, but will still operate 'wirelessly' from my laptop (in other words , do you only need a wireless one if you want to position it away from the router )
And if it does not have to be wireless, can anyone recommend a good cheap all-in-one --- not too bothered about colour quality as will mainly be black and white printing

Sounds like a great idea!! But you'd need some clarification from a better techie than me!! What I would say is buy a Kodak printer... The ink is so much cheaper than everyone else and much better quality. Ink is the most overly-priced thing in the world!!!0

You will need a printer with an Ethernet port to do this. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

sorry - I am so untechnical - I have a laptop, I have a router giving a wireless signal to it - that is all I know - how do I know which printers I can connect to the router so I can print remotely from my laptop ? All-in-one printer adverts are for 'wireless' or just unlabelled, so is there a further category split ?0

One here, but you might be better off just getting a WiFi enabled one.
