Sky is beautiful! We flew up to Glasgow and hired a car (it's a beautiful drive)... We stayed in Portree and had a self catering place. We weren't around much as we went for hiking so it's funciton was sleeping, showering, breakfast and making our packed lunch! Portree is very small but very quaint. If you are thinking of going over one of the long weekends in May, book early!!0

Cheap accomodation on Skye = no such thing sorry.
You get there over the sea by bridge.Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind. - Albert Einstein.

As already stated, you now just drive (or walk) over the bridge - not quite as romantic as getting the boat! However, if you want to do something a bit different, you could do as I did a few years ago, which was to go by train, including the caledonian sleeper to inverness. Depending on where you are located, you can join the sleeper at london, crewe or preston. I had a berth in a standard class cabin, which has bunk beds and a sink. You then wake up to beautiful scenery the next morning.
You can then get the (steam?) train along the herritage line to Kyle of Localsh, via some more stunning scenery. Obviously this works out more expensive than just driving, but it's much less stresfull and leaves you nice and relaxed. Scotrail also have a "bargain berths" offer on some services at the moment with fares as low as £19. You can use local buses to get from Kyle on the mainland to Kyleakin on the Skye end of the bridge and onwards around the island. IIRC it's possible to hire a car or bikes up there - but you might want to double check this is still the case.
If you are on a budget, there are several youth hostels on the island and you dont even have to be a member and can often book a private room. When I stayed they were very cosy and mostly being used by 40 and 50 something walkers and cyclists with a handful of young Aussie travellers.

you might find this site useful:

if you go to the accomodation link, it has some B&Bs from £20 pppn
also, the clandonald visitor centre has some self catering cottages/log cabins, but they are about £450 a week (but sleep upto 6).0
