DVD Recorder - which one

Hi - I am having Sky + HD put in on Thursday and have spent the last few days watching as much of the stuff we had saved on sky + as we could because our DVD recorder - Goodmans about 3 years old - is refusing to recognise the blank discs to be recordered onto. we get so far then it says "disc error" or "non recordable disc" we have tried new discs that have worked before and are getting no-where, has anyone come across this before, the instructions are no help.
Our other option is to start again with a new machine but I am confused about which one to go for. Ideally we would still like to record onto disc but the hard drive thing sounds good for taping off the TV and as a back up to Sky. If any one has any advice or suggestions it would be most appreciated
Thank you
