just had a quick look for the policy online but RAC seem to have a number of different ones depending on when you took out the policy so just make sure you read the correct document.

good luck, hope your hubby has now de-stressed :D

Is this a breakdown policy or an insurance policy, or both?
Self confessed nerd when it comes to anything financial and/or numerical!

Surely, no one in their right mind would accept a lift to the station before properly handing the car to be repaired or towed to a garage.

It was up to your husband to get the car removed, not his insurer.

(If your car breaks down, you don't expect your insurer to be responsible for getting it home!)

The RAC (breakdown service) will recover your car after an accident, (but you have to pay them)

Agreed, sounds to me as though the OP thinks the insurance policy covers accident, breakdown and recovery service, the insurance will recover a car and provide a courtesy car while it is being repaired but in their own time not immediately, surely for roadside assist service you need an RAC/AA or similar breakdown service.
  • Yes it sounds like the OP is getting their breakdown and insurance mixed up.
RAC seem to have offered what their policy offers (i.e transport home). The policy doesnt state they will transport the car or related furniture home as well and given this was an insured incident they won't.

The OP should have called their insurers who would have offered advice but insurence doesnt always cover immediate recovery and replacement car. Its possible the car would be recovered to an impound.

RAC have agreed that my husband is eligible for a ride home along with all the luggage. The car will be brought back to London for repairs. A courtesy car will be provided in a day or two. He will be on his way in half an hour they said. All my husband was asking for is what the policy said - it's taken them over 12 hours!

Thats good, so the insurance have actually done what the policy said if you had wanted instant service you should have joined one of the emergency services.

If he had accident/breakdown cover with relay and the vehicle was unroadworthy he and the vehicle would have been seen and brought home within an hour or so of the accident last night.
