Help needed with logo.

I need some help with finding someone to design a logo for me, I’ve searched online and haven't got a clue what I’m looking for so I’m hoping someone with a bit more knowledge will be able to point me in the right direction of a good but cheap place to get a logo designed. I know you shouldn't really skimp on logo design but as a single parent trying to get a new business started my budget is really really tight so I’d really appreciate it if anyone could help me out.
