I hope you can help me. We have been informed by our car insurance company that someone has made a claim against our insurance. They are claiming that our car was involved in an accident and that they have 3 'witnesses' to this. The first we knew about it was when we received an email saying 'sorry to hear about your recent accident' from the insurance company. We contacted them (SwiftCover) and told them that we had not had an accident and this was a attempt to make a fraudulent claim against our policy. They said that they would sort it out - this was February. It is now June and we are still no further forward and I have made another request for details of this 'accident' so we can once and for all prove that the allegation is untrue and they (insurers) haven't responded but funnily enough they were quick enough to send the insurance renewal quote which is 50% more than last year with no no-claims bonus because this 'claim' is still open God knows why. We can't move our insurance until this has been sorted out and I'm at my wits end. Have any of you had a similar experience of this kind of fraud and can offer any advice on what to do?

Thanks
Sunny

What sort of "accident", might it be a slight "touch" in a carpark or something?

Im claiming against someone for this right now, he did very little damage, but im chasing it because he drove off without leaving any details.... I have a witness.

Or could someone be driving around in a clone of your car? (same reg)

Sorting claims out does take time (months - sometimes years - rather than weeks).

But you aren't forced to remain with the same insurer till it's resolved.

Inform your chosen new insurer about the circumstances and that the "claim" is unresolved, and ask that they amend your premium (and refund the difference) if your NCD is reinstated in the future.

Not particularly helpful in your circumstances but Swiftcover are pretty useless when it comes to customer service and administration, as my daughter found to her cost when they "dealt" with a no fault accident claim. There is a reason for them being "cheap"! The at fault parties insurance and approved repairer were just the opposite (Zurich) they were excellent throughout.
An awful situation for you, so good luck.
  • hi strider, we have no idea because the insurance haven't told us anything despite asking for details, the only thing they told us was the date, no time, where etc and we need this info to prove our whereabouts..... we don't know if our car has been cloned either though that's a possibility we hadn't considered tbh. I just want this over and it just seems that this insurance company aren't in any particular hurry to sort it out!

That was my first thought too.

In your shoes I'd make sure I found out where it the incident is alledged to have happened, if it's alledged to have happened, see if that provides any more information.

  • hi sarsie,

    Update...

Had an email from the insurer today giving us the information I requested and it definitely wasn't us as neither of us were in the area at the time of the alleged incident - I actually don't work in London and can prove this. I have now responded to the insurers and waiting to find out what evidence they want so we can finally bring closure to this. I have suggested to the insurer about the possibility that our car may have been cloned (why didn't they think of that?) let's see what they come back with.

    I'll keep you updated.

    Thanks everyone

I was involved in a minor shunt caused by a dog a few years ago,the was two cars & my company van.The car in front was'nt damaged although in trying to miss the cars in front I clipped the rear wing of the second car. (Thankfully that was a company car so no loss to the driver!)
The RUC came out & found no one was to blame, the shunt being caused by the dog.
About 4 months later,I recieved a call from my companies insurers saying the first car,a Merc driven by a woman, was damaged. The RUC officer had asked her if her car was hit & she swore no,it was'nt.
I passed it back to my companies insurers with a copy of the accident report & the Officers details & did'nt hear anything more about it.
Good luck Sunny,I learnt from the above people will lie thru their teeth to make some money without a care for the legalities & the stress it causes others.
    Aint the human race great!
  • Hi spike7451,

I know what you mean, these people really don't give a toss about the stress they are causing as long as they get paid! Some members of the human race are complete scumbags like the ones who are trying to rip us off, but they will not win.
