Where can I get an independent inspection report for a faulty mobile?

Hi, hope you can help me. I've had an ongoing situation with a PAYG phone I bought for my teenager's Christmas. Within a week, the buttons down the left-hand side stopped working, so I took it back to the shop.

They refused to do anything as the damp indicator was showing pink, and I was told that this invalidated my consumer rights and guarantee, and that the phone shouldn't be used outside if it was raining (it wasn't) or snowing (it was). Trading standards have been involved, and at the start of April, the retailer agreed to send the phone to their engineers for a report. Surprise, surprise - this showed that the fault was due to water ingress.

I don't accept that a mobile costing £60 should last less than a week, and Trading Standards say that my only option now is to get an independent report done and take it to the small claims court.

I'm looking into this (bearing in mind it's taken six months and a lot of stress to get this far) but I can't find an independent engineer. Can anyone recommend or suggest one in the central belt of Scotland?

Thanks

There is a lot more stress ahead of you yet.

Is it really worth it for £60??

Even if you win, you will only get another rubbish phone which is going to fail at the first sign of moisture in the air.

Could Trading Standards offer you the name of someone to do an independent report?

    Any phone repairer should do.

But have to say, think hard about what CHR15 has said.

Different makes have different repair locationis, so you might want to mention the phones brand.

You might well have to pay for the independent assesment, which you would supposedly claim back from the manufacturer/shop you bought from.

3 buttons down the side stopping working does sound an awful lot like water damage, however.

Guys, you're right - it's far too much hassle for £60. The main reason is that when I first took it back, the main person in the shop was really rude and aggressive, and I actually left in tears. And that's SO not like me.

I don't actually need or want another phone - it just makes me angry that they (T Mob) can get away with such poor service. There was a hint of pink on the dampness indicator on the (samsung) phone. We've all got Nokia ones that have lasted for years and years, not a week. It feels like the buttons aren't aligned properly under the cover. They work when you press them at a certain angle. If I honsetly thought it was water damage, I'd walk away, but I'm sure it's a mechanical problem.

    Thanks for replying.
