freeview channels and sony play tv query

Just put an old tv with separate freeview box in the bedroom (got an aerial socket in there linked to the outdoor aerial - don't ask me the technicalities, I haven't a clue:D).
It can only find a few freeview channels. (Think this is down to the aerial signal). Tried a different aerial lead and although it found a few more channels they came back as saying 'no signal'.
Happened to get a Sony Play Tv thingy for my son last week but he wasn't keen so I am about to return it. Before I do, would this be likely to find any more channels?
Or (as I would guess), would it just find the same channels as it is down to the actual aerial reception and cabling?
Thanks:)

Thanks for replying, Ali:). Looks like a trip to Currys tomorrow to return the play tv. (Pity as it was a bargain price!).
I'll also give the local aerial guy a ring to see what he says.0 -
Beware that if there's no fault, you're not entitled to a refund. The aerial not being up to the job has no bearing.0
