Pc Coming To A Standstill

Hi out there, I'm in need of a bit of help please. My pc has got progressivly slower of late and is now refusing to shut down form the start menu and I have to turn off the power. I have run McAfee virus scan and nothing showed up. I have firewall and have also run iolo sytem mechanic spython. I am running XP with service pack2 on a time system with an AMD 2800 chip, 1024 ram (which I have recently defraged with iolo) and 160 gb hard drive which is about half full. I was thinking of getting an external hard drive and transfering everything over from my pc then formatting my original internal drive. The only thing is that XP was already loaded when I got my pc so I don't have a cd copy so I was worried that I might not be able to recover my system afterwards. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure that iolo only does stuff when I request it to and doesn't run in the background. The spython program is an adware/malware/spyware scanner and I run this regularly and my system came up pretty clean yesterday before I posted the thread so do you still think I need to download ewido? McAfee virus scan also found nothing. I did find out a month or two back though that McAfee Spamkiller is a major pain in the !!!!!! as it slowly eats up your cpu speed so that has been kicked off and I would advise anyone else with spamkiller who has probs to also get rid.0

Ewido is one of the foremost malware removal programs available. The makers have worked very closely with the anti-malware community for several years now to constantly update the software with the latest malware definitions. The same cannot be said for iolo Spython I'm afraid. If your system has any malware present, Ewido would definately be one of the first programs I'd scan with.master_of_puppets wrote:The spython program is an adware/malware/spyware scanner and I run this regularly and my system came up pretty clean yesterday before I posted the thread so do you still think I need to download ewido?
