ok guys
some of you might already know that on Monday, we would be living on a campsite... which means we would have to eat canned food. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to what to cook with canned ingredients. i already know that a tin of tuna into a tin of mixed veggies is quite yummy, but we would like to fight the monotony of canned raviolis and canned macaroni & cheese.
Any idea would be welcome...
Thank you in advance.

corned beef hash is always a winner or take some tinned/bottled curry sauce its easy enough to nip to local shop to campsite and get some meat to go in it. you could always freeze something before you go like spag bol/chilli for example, take it out of the freezer when you leave your house and keep it in a coolbag and it should be fine for the next days meal. tins of stewed steak are great too also its easy enough to make something like a spanish ommelette out of tinned veggies, have a great time camping, angchrisproper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0

You can make cous cous with a kettle or rehydrate it with hot soup and add veggies, mixed beans, tuna, ratatouille etc.
Tinned/pre made mince, baked beans, instant mash and canned veggies = crap cottage pie
Tinned fruit & custard/rice pudding = something or other
Tuna/salmon sarnies
Mushroom & tomatoes on toast0 -
I used to organise food for Guide camps. If you could post exactly what facilities you will have, such as numbers of burners and pans, I will dredge my memory/books for suggestions both for recipes and for keeping food fresh withot a fridge. Here's a suggestion to start with.
Corned Beef Stew
Chop corned beef, put in pan with tin of vegetable soup, and any other canned veg you fancy (which means you can vary it) and heat up. You could add canned potatoes too, or serve with rice or pasta if you have more than one burner. Our recipe was always baked beans and garden peas but we only had to eat it once each camp - it sounds as though you may need to repeat your menus
I haven't seen any other threads so was unaware of your predicament. I wish you well and hope that you get sorted before too long.0 -
thx a bunch
for those who havent read my going bonkers thread, we are forced to move into a campsite to while waiting for our house to complete (should only be 2-3 weeks)
we have a 8 people tent for the 2 of us so should be ok
we have a double mini gas hob, a cheap pan, and a cheap frying pan, as well as a cooler bag with the frozen blue blocks.
Thx a lot for the ideas!"Don't cry, Don't Raise your Eye

Well at least the weather is likely to be a reasonable temperature for that length of time, possibly bar very early morning and late evening. Looking on the positive side.
Is there no way you can have another saucepan? More than one will increase your range no end. Cooking on camping gaz will not harm normal domestic pans in the way that a wood fire does. Also they have thicker bases and will cook more evenly without burning. Steamer so that you can cook more than 1 thing at a time on each burner?0 -
Meatballs in tomato sauce, with spagetti if you get another pan, or you could have them with couscous0

OK. Books not a great deal of help as we never restricted ourselves to just tins, and truth be told I doubt you will either, depending on how you can fit shopping in with work etc.
Tuna Fishcakes
Mix drained can of tuna with made up instant mashed potato, salt and pepper and an egg. Divide, and ideally shape with floured hands, then fry until golden both sides. In your limited situation I would just drop spoonfuls into frying pan and squash flat. Suggest accompany with baked beans or tinned spaghetti, or peas.
Fritters
Slices of luncheon meat dipped into batter and fried until golden both sides. You could use a packet batter mix to avoid the need to weigh/ measure stuff out. Make the batter quite thick so it stays on the meat.
We used to get tins of stewed steak in gravy which were quite nice. I haven't looked because I haven't needed to, but I expect they still make them. Like with the corned beef you could add vegetables and tinned potatoes and make an all in one stew.
If you could get some rolls one day you could have hot dogs made with tinned hot dog sausages.
About keeping things fresh.
Milk will keep for a day or so stood in a bucket of cold water in shade. Trouble is you really need to be able to move it as the sun moves around - assuming it is sunny that is
Butter and other fats, cheese etc will keep quite well if you can hang them up in a tree, with an airflow around them. They would be fine in plastic tubs in a string bag if you could manage that. Depends on the campsite and who is around though, I suppose, as to whether you would feel like risking your precious supplies like that. Problem is that storing out of sight in a closed tent can get too warm.
Similarly fruit and veg keep reasonably well hung up with an airflow around them.
I really cannot believe the food suggestions I am making for a French girl :rotfl:
Best of luck, and don't forget the chippy or take away at least once a week, especially if it is chucking it down. The situation is not of your choosing and it is not a prison sentence. Treat yourselves.0 -
How about getting some chicken breast sliced up , chop a large onion and fry with a little olive oil when the onion is nearly cooked bung in the sliced chicken breast and sprinkle with some chilli powder to taste.. when cooked we eat it in a pitta bread with some salad , they are delice.... :T#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

As its a short period of time, if it was me I would make do with a lot of sarnies for the majority.
However a one pot stew/casserole type meal is probably the easiest. Although I liked the pan fried chicken pitta bread idea above.
I make a panaggy (pan haggerty) dish. Its cheap, quick, filling, and great with bread for mopping up. slice/dice some potatoes into bite size pieces and bring to the boil add a chopped onion, boil till cooked, add a can of baked beans, crumble some corned beef in for the last couple of minutes to heat through. Season, serve and eat. I used to have this as a kid and I still love it.
Alternatively although its not terribly OS but those canned stewing meats heated in a pan add a tin of veg, maybe tinned pots or a tin of soup to make another type of stew.
