I e-mailed Thorpe Park with my question, and was told that there were 11,500 people there on 31 May, and an average of around 13,000 during midweek dates in August 2009. It appears that their target market is mainly those rich kids that are at university and dont have to work during their long summer holidays to pay off their student loans!!!!

I think I will pass on Thorpe Park this year.

I don't know how far you are from Thorpe Park so am assuming you can do it as a day trip, but have you considered waiting til your son has an inset day, especially if he has one that's not immediately before or after a half term break. I often took my kids to big parks on inset days, it often seemed to be that it was a school day in the area where the parks were and we got some really good days with no queues

We live approx 120 miles away, or 2.5 hours by road. Unfortunately the county we live in seem to have inset days on exactly the same days as other counties. Our annual passes run out on 24 August and I dont plan to renew them, so its between now and 24 August, or not at all.

    I'm leaning towards the latter.

The other thing you could try is aiming for the day with the worst weather... If you are there for the rides, the weather doesn't really matter, but it will keep a lot of people away, so next time there is a grotty forecast, maybe try again?

Or pay £10 for a fast pass. IT doesn't cover all the rides, but if you get to the park for opening time, hit the rides you don't have a FP for first, then in the busy part of the day use your FP.

If you have to go on a non school day, your 3 options are really a) Big Q, b) get wet (rainy day), c) Pay money for FP.

Saw and stealth are great rides! Worth the hassle imo.

Going on a rainy day is a very good idea, although we have not done it for Thorpe Park, have been to Legoland a few times when it was raining and hardly anyone was there. Likewise in the recent half term holiday there was a wet day at Alton towers that allowed us to do the rides several times over.
  • We went to alton towers 1/2 term week (got merlin passes) bank holiday saturday it rained but few people. and the bank holiday monday was quiet - staff said everyone thinks it will be busy so stay away and result - a quiet day!! But the thursday 3rd june and friday 4th june were manic!!! 2 hour queues for sonic spinball. (altough due to oldest being in plaster and on crutches we got a temporary disability pass meaning we didn't queue for anything :D
I have to say having been to all parks I prefer alton towers and chessington to thorpe park - we have 11, 8, and 4 yr old and thorpe park because of 2 being under 1.4m is a wasted day out but since we have already got our moneys worth from the merlin pass a day by the beach at thorpe park in the heat of the summer is a relaxing day! Off to surrey in 7 weeks for 14 days of rollercoaster fun, my little one can't wait - loves vampire!! - he got me on it and I have to say I agree:rotfl:
Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.
