Can i get a refund?

I bought a vacuum cleaner from ARGOS recently and it has stopped picking up - it has only been used a dozen or so times - I want to return it to ARGOS as faulty, but in the documents that came in the box say it should be returned to manufactor, not vendor?
If I return it to manufactor this will take quite some time, and I will not have a vacuum - if I return to store, can I get a replacement/refund? Also, if I get a replacement, does it have to be the same, as I have no confidence in the model now.
Any advice would be appreciated

How recent? I believe Argos is the first port of call, they may well send it to the manufacturer. I would just take it back and see what they say.

I don't mean to sound funny or anything, but have you check the vacuum for any blockages in the pipe and/or filter/entrance to the dust chamber/bag?
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

If it is an upright cleaner the drive belt may have broken or come off. I've managed to do this twice to an Argos own brand and once to an old Dyson all within the past 6 months.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Who will send it to their approved repairer, guess who, the manufacturer who they asked you to contact in the first place. As suggested have you checked it for blockages. The manufacturer number is there for a reason, they are the experts and can fix many faults over the phone !! If it is sent back to the manufacturer for repair and they find a sock stuck in the pipe they have every right to make a charge.

Sure check it out for blockage, belt etc first, but it's a whole lot easier to take it back to Argos, unless of course the manufacturer sends an engineer to the OP's home.

There's also a strong chance they will exchange or refund.

There's a myriad of questions to answer!

How "recently" did you purchase it? or what date did you purchase it?
What brand of vacuum is it?

If it's a Dyson or a Vax and you've had it for more than 30 days or so then you should contact them directly. Yes, before the SOGA brigade (:rotfl:) come out in force, Argos are legally required to rectify the problem under consumer law, but if there is a repair facility for the vacuum all the store will do is get the Dyson/Vax engineer to come to the store to repair it in store or pick it up, repair it and then send it back to the store, whereas if you contact them directly they will come to you at a time suitable for you and return it to your home, therefore you are not having to make a round trip back to the store.

I should point out that the reason many manufacturers such as Dyson, Vax, Sony PlayStation and Microsoft XBOX prefer the customer to contact them directly so they can arrange to courier the item directly to/from the customer so they can resolve the problem quickly, rather than using the shop/retailer as a third party.
[Edit: just read what molerat said and I agree!]

If you've had it less than 30 days or it is a different brand vacuum (such as Argos Value) then go back to the store with the item and your receipt/proof of purchase.
