Solar garden lights

I bought 6 of these about four years ago and only three are still working. Is there some way I could check whats wrong (they are in full sun all day) or do they have a limited life span?

I've never had any decent working ones, they normally use very cheap photovoltaic cells and basic bulbs.

Check the solar panels are clear and not crazed over and changing the rechargeable batteries may help. (Try putting the batteries from the good lights into the non working ones first to test). Cheapest suitable batteries are in Poundland, £1 for 4 yellow rechargeables.
Failing that, as the prices of solar lights have tumbled since you purchased yours, you might want to consider renewing them. The Charlie Dimmock ones at 4 for £9.99 on the Woolworths site are ok and the buy 2 get 1 free at £4.99 each on Play.com in the gadgets section are fine. Unfortunatley the Play.com steel ones have sold out - they were the best of all the offers around.

Thanks for replies. I didnt realise they had batteries (I have never really thought about how they worked!)

Are there any of these lights which actually throw out some light to light up an area. You can see my ones at the end of the garden but they don't illuminate any shrubs
