ISP from a different country?

Can anyone assist in telling me how to find out the country that an Email is sent from, please.

I am an Owner/Mod on Freegle/Freecycle and we constantly find our members are getting spammed with offers & info requiring members to visit various sites, Etc. This we need to stop.

Obviously we only have members from our own locality so anyone outside that locality is not welcome but the emails appear to come from the States, and are probably sent out in bulk, by an email harnessing program.

Thjey can only get the contact details if they are members but they have joined under a different name to that used for sending emails, but hopefully the computer address will be discoverable (Provided they use the same computer)

Change your system such that your members' e-mail addresses can't be harnessed by a program? Possibly use the e-bay model, where users have their e-mail held behind a user ID, and e-mails can only be routed singly to one ID from another.

I feel you'd be better served consulting either the Security team at your ISP, or consulting experts in the field of website security, rather than looking for help here.

Try using http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/ip-address-locator.php to find the location of the ISP/Company associated with an IP address.

what some sites do is convert and only display a user's email in an image file rather than as machine readable text. Makes it alot harder to auto harvest that way

You could copy and paste the email headers into here

    http://headertool.apelord.com/headers

But it only works, if the person uses an email program on his/her PC. If he uses a webmailer, then the information might not be accurate. If I send an email from my Gmail account it will be sent from an US IP address even though I'm in the UK.

You guys are forgetting that this is primarely a mailing list (which can be accessed online though after logging in). So email addresses have to be visible by definition, otherwise you'll not be able to contact the advertising person.

I'm not 'forgetting' anything - I freely admit I've never looked at Freecycle, but if, as described, it shows user's e-mail addresses on the page, then it sounds as though it would benefit from a re-vamp to, as I say, use a login and User ID system.

e-Bay works this way, and I have no difficulty contacting others within the system.

You still don't see the difference. It's a mailing list, not a forum or other web service. Whoever subscribes to it is getting EMAILS sent to their email account. The email address of the person who offers or is searching for something has to be visible in the From: header. This is how email works. Otherwise it goes nowhere when you click Reply in your email client.

The question of the OP is, how to find out where the person is living and disallow him to subscribe to the mailing list in first place. This way he wouldn't be able to get the email addresses.

I'm a member of a local Freecycle group, and no, I wouldn't like it to login on a website to read new messages. Email is so much faster to read through all new messages and more efficient. I also can read while off-line and sort/filter it the way I like.

I get it, and I would suggest the whole modus operandi is flawed, if it leads to spam to the extent that the OP describes.

I also realise I'm not answering his question, merely suggesting the question be dodged around by revision of his website system.

    Sorry.

    Total ignorance here.

How do I find the header to paste into the box provided by Headertool?

Thanks for all of the other suggestions and assistance. I have passed these over to one of the more techy Mods.

Any other help more than appreciated. :)

Depends on the email program you're using. In Thunderbird just press Ctrl+U while the email is displayed. For other email programs just google for "show headers xyz".

You could accept subscriptions only by email, if the IP is from the UK. If the IP is from outside the UK you could send a confirmation email to them with an activation link they need to click in their web browser. On the web server where the page from the activation link is located you could see then, what IP accesses it. But this is getting more and more complicated to set up. And if these people really want to subscribe, there is always a way around it (proxy server,VPN,...).

And where do you stop? What if UK people start to spam?
