Washing machine will not spin

My elderly father has an AEG Oko Lavamat 6450 washing machine. but it has suddenly started to stop the wash cycle without spinning.

I opened the drain pump cover at the bottom front, hoping to find that is was blocked ... leading to an easy repair.

Unfortunately nothing there. the impellors of the pump behind seem free to move, so I am puzzled.

The machine pumps water out, but that's all it does.

What could be the problem ?

Is a DIY possible ... is it maybe some sort of belt

Many thanks for any help

sounds like the belt may have come off or snapped, there should be an access panel at the rear of the machine to check, or you could remove the lid

Just a thought, is he putting enough clothes in it. We have a new machine and it wouldn't spin, when they came to repair it, it was working ok, it transpired that machines will not spin with very little clothes in it, (partner had x2 tops only in it) apparently it stops the machine shaking and jumping across the room etc.

does the drum turn normally until the cycle reaches spin?
if so, this was the first symptom of worn out motor brushes on our last machine. some brushes are easier to get at than others.

Thank you for all the quick replies

    Kaya ..
I opened the back and the belt seems fine. In fact all that I could see looked pretty good and clean . No obvious problems. The manual said to look for a kinked hose ... but if a machine has worked for ages, how would a hose all iof a sudden get a kink in it.

    Paul ..
My father has Alzheimers, so we do the washing for him. A normal load is used, or maybe a small 1/2 load if there's been an 'accident'.

    Bockster ..
Yes, everything runs normally until the spin. The drums turns as usual

After your comments and a couple of Google checks, it seems the carbon brushes are maybe the first things to look at.

Even though there's a Youtube video, showing how easy it easy to change them (easy ???) I think I'll just phone a local repair shop.

At least I'll have some idea when he starts giving me a list of faults.

One last question .. if it is, in fact only the brushes .. whats a fair price for the repair (NE England)

    thanks again !

a WM engineer will charge 50/100 quid for any repair. minimum.
you maybe be better off looking for a new WM if you cannot DIY the job.

depending on the age of the WM.

Our AEG Lavamat had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago. It was 15 years old and had been well used. The engineer indicated the he could fix the problem but at that age there would be something else wearing out before long so it was more cost effective to get a new one.

That was fine but the bad news was that AEG are not the same quality as they were (something to do with being part of the Electrolux group) so not a recommended route for a new one. For the same quality level then you only really have Miele to look at these days. Bosch was considered the best of the rest.

any friendly neighbours/diy pals you can pick on for crate of beer? brushes are ussually straight forward, but sometimes you have to tip the m/c upside down to get good access to the motor. would be a shame to ditch the m/c just for brushes if indeed they are the cause, parts should be available for no more than £15 delivered me thinks.
    good luck.

Brushes are quite easy to do - just make sure you've watched more than one how-to videos. Take a photo of around the motor, from above, below, left right - all angles - then you will start feeling comfortable as the bits on the videos match up to your machine.

Myself, I would leave the machine unplugged for 24 hours before working on it, just to try and get rid of any built up charges and minimise chances of shocks. ;)
