I think I killed my mobile phone

Hi

I think I got water in my Sony Ericsson C510 :o I've got a year left before I can get an upgrade and no insurance. Being so untechie, it's untrue, what can I do? Is it worth seeing if anybody can fix it or shall I just get a new phone? I'm with vodafone, so would I need a phone unlocked to vodafone?

Many thanks

Gwenx

    Hi Gwen,

Your phone is probably now a very good paperweight. Do you have "Accidental Damage" or "Personal Possessions" cover on your home insurance? If you do, you could see whether it's worth claiming on you home insurance for a new phone.

The thing I would say is that the C510 is only £80 on ebay (clicky) so that may be a better option for you, or the W205 from Vodafone (clicky) at £35 would be even better for now...

yup, basically take the battery off and leave everything to dry out for an extended period (min 3 days, ideally a week).

I've had one sit overnight in a puddle and be fine before, important thing is not to try to turn it on before its fully dry as thats when any water in it will short something out and permanently fry the thing

As mentioned above if its only water then id advise letting it dry out over a few days and see if it is working. More often than not it will work again, but it does depend how much it was tried to be turned on when wet and if it was on when it got wet etc. Still very much worth a try though.

I agree with the above posters in letting it fully dry out for a few days
if that fails then I would advise taking the phone apart and cleaning the PCB and connectors with isoproply cleaning fluid (maplin or ebay)

I've dropped two different Nokia's into the sink over the years..... After drying out in the airing cupboard, both worked again! Sister in law dropped her phone down the loo and was trying NOT to let on what had happened when she went into the shop. However, the assistant said - it's probably the most common mobile accident people have, just to leave it to dry out and fingers crossed, it should be fine. It was!

    Hi

I'm still trying to sort this out and not doing very well. I am really bad with technology. It's still not working. Can they fix water damaged phones? Also, if I get a new one is it likely that I will have lost all my numbers? Do Sony Ericsson's normally save the numbers to the phone or the SIM?

    Thanks again

Gwen, it probably depends what type of memory you have selected. If you have 'sim only' for displaying your contacts, it will save to the sim. If you have phone only, it will save to the phone. If you had both (phone and sim), and it didn't ask you each time you put a contact in, it will probably save to the phone (more memory on the handset than on the sim). That's how nokias work anyway. I can't promise it's the same for sony ericssons though.

If it isn't working 6 weeks on then I think you can safely say it is busted.
I doubt even an expensive phone would be economical to repair so I don't see that being an option.
Most phones by default store numbers in the phone and you have to copy them to the sim (that's because the contact data can be a lot fancier in the phone that a SIM will support) so if you didn't copy your contacts to the sim or set it to save to SIM then they are history.

Time to bite the bullet I'm afraid.

On the bright side insurance wouldn't have saved your numbers and over a year would cost more than just buying another phone.

You mean you didn't take out phone insurance 6 weeks ago for when you dropped the phone down the loo this morning???
