noisy washing machine

my 5 year old washing machine is making a right racket now when its spinning, a pretty loud 'droning' i guess, gf says its a kind of hollow hum and its definately speed related, i live in a really hard water area, its disgusting to be honest, always use calgon tho (just to be safe), any ideas what it could be?
