also onions. i had two little pigs now just one but you cant give them onions either. similar to potatoes in that way. they love anything veggie. cauliflower and broccoli are good but dont give them too much lettuce or cabbage as this will give them upset tummies!

To be perfectly honest I'd be pretty careful about feeding them any veg. As it is a school piggy you don't know what its used to and how much so you could make it very unwell. If you want to feed veg its best to do it gradually ie 1 small piece. Kale, spring greens, bell peppers, celery (must be cut very small chunks because of the string), carrot, parsley, basil are all safe. You will need to watch calcuim content tho as again too much can make them ill.

Thanks for the advice, they are so cute only 6 months old and loving the grass they make lovely pets for children think I might get my own soon as my old hutch will look very empty again next week
  • Useless info - only humans, guinea pigs and the red-vented bulbul can't make their own vitamin C, and have to consume it.

Our guinea pigs used to love all left over greens especially sprout leaves (not teh right time I know) basically any greens left over in teh kitchen - raw ofcourse - cauli leaves, outside cabbage leaves, carrots .... We used to take them out in a carrier bag and if they heard a carrier bag what a cacophany - squeak, squeak . I miss that sound! and the chuntering when enjoying their veggies.

They will basically eat most fruit/salad/grass/weeds etc. DO NOT give lettuce-yes they love to eat it but it can give them stomach cancer!!! They do need vitamin C just make sure that the dried food you give them are for g-pigs and not for rabbits/hamsters etc-seriously I have seen rabbit and hamster food sold as g-pig food the proper food has vitamin c added. A typical deficiency of this shows as the animal dragging it's hind legs.

This is a good site for guinea pig info http://www.aracnet.com/~seagull/Guineas/feeding.html

Even grass can cause digestive upset if they are not used to it so limit time out unless they are usually able to munch grass!
