Linux question

Hi all,
in the process of migrating from xp to linux. Installed Suse 10.1 and updated packages. It seems to have updated kernel modules (/lib/modules/), and the kernel doesn't know where to find them anymore - its still looking for the old version modules.

I can't load any modules, so pretty much nothing works. Any ideas how I can fix this??

Many thanks,
Garcia.

    What does running ldconfig do?

    Not a lot unfortunately. Do I need to recompile the kernel or is there an easier way to get it to recognize the new location of the modules??

    You shouldn't need to recompile the kernel just because you've upgraded some packages (unless Suse has done something pretty stupid in there, but I doubt it).

    Unfortunately you could have one of two issues, of which I'm trying to determine the issue you have. Normally when upgrading packages, it updates shared libraries etc. which often causes problems with incompatible versions. It seemed likely that this is the problem you have as it is by far the most common problem with packages.

    But the other problem is that kernel modules (which are loaded dynamically in to the kernel when required via insmod or modprobe) as opposed to them being compiled in to the kernel, may have been changed and are no loner being loaded correctly.

    Please forgive me but I assumed that you were more of a novice Linux user and likely to have the first problem (as it's most common) but it seems as though it is more a case of the second problem. Please forgive me assuming this but upon review it's likely it is the second problem.

    Please can you give me the output of the following commands:

    $ ls -l /lib/modules
    $ uname -a
    $ lsmod
    $ ksyms

    Many thanks,
    Amos

    The distro doesn't make any difference to the operation of the kernel, a module is pretty much stock. Distros are nothing more than clothing, but the issue isn't related to the cosmetics :)
