What happens if you are on benefits and your child start working

Not for a few years yet. Was just wondering as I am a carer with no option to work, what will happen when my son start work. Will he be expected to support us or do they expect him to move out if he does not earn enough. Could we get tax credits to top his wages up?

Getting tax credits depends on his age, hours worked and whether he's disabled or have children of his own.

    Who are you caring for?

Why do you have no option to work?

His wages will not affect IS or JSA(IB) but as far as I am aware can affect Housing Benefit.

Don't get housing benefit as own our own home. He will be 18 and has younger siblings.

I care for my husband who was disabled in a RTA many years ago.

Any means tested benefits will be affected but if you son is working his contribution (board and lodge) should more than cover
    any loss of benefit.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You can carry on claiming CB and CTC until his 20th birthday if he's in non advanced further education. If he goes to university he'll be able to apply for the usual funding package of loans and grants to support himself, whether at home or living away.

Nothing will change then - a non-dependant's income isnt taken into account.

I am a carer for my disabled son and cannot work due to his needs. I receive Income Support, as I am a single parent.

My daughter started work last year and I enquired about my benefits because of this. I still get IS, CA, and CTC (although CTC is reduced because obviously I don't get any for my daughter). I still get help with my mortgage.

The only thing that is affected is my council tax benefit. My daughter pays the bill - I am seen as 'invisible'. The bill is worked out from her wages - she isn't a high earner, so it isn't a vast amount. I think the maximum is £6.95 a week.

My daughter pays me board, but even though I have declared this to IS, they weren't interested in the amount as it doesn't affect my benefits.

If your husband is getting any rate of care component of DLA there will be no non dependant deduction from your Council Tax Benefit. If he gets at least the middle rate of care component I assume you get Carers Allowance and Income Support including housing costs and well as CHB and CTC for the kids. You'll simply lose the amount you got for your son if he's in 'proper' FT work and not training/apprenticeship for which you can still get both benefits for him.
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
