Made redundant - notice period query

I was given notice of my redundancy last week and told I could go home and no need to work notice period.

In my contract it says that notice for termination of employment is no less than one month's notice. Does it matter that it is via redundancy ?

My question is - is the notice period one calendar month or 4 weeks. For example if I was given notice on 24th May is my last working day 15th June ie 4 weeks or 23rd June 1 month ( I only work MTW each week).
It's the difference of one weeks pay to me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think, and only think, its actually 4 weeks, sorry.

How long have you worked there. Statutory redundancy is 1 week for every year you have worked there.
    (depending on your age)

So if you are say 25 with 6 years service you get 6 weeks pay and any accrued holiday pay.

    Thanks Mckneff

    I'm 43 and have been there 2yrs 10 months.so I reckon it's 3 weeks pay for redundancy pay ( at least it's tax free ).

A month is a month: a month is not four weeks (except in February).

If notice was given on, say, 27 May, it would expire on 27 June. (However early in the day the notice was given, you would start counting the following calendar day.)

Would it not be two years as it is only completed years that count?
At age 43, the OP would be looking at 1.5 weeks' pay for each of those completed years.

I think because of my age it is 1.5 week pay per year. OOps posted at the same time.

Thank you anamenottaken - that's what I reckoned so we'll see what they say when they send me the details :)

If it says a month it is a month.

If you were given notice 24 May, 24th June is last working day

This is also the date to use for calculating outstanding holidays and service for redundancy.

In practice if you work Mon Tue Wed your last day would be 23rd.

4 weeks would be 21st not the 15th thats 3 weeks one day.

    When did you start?

    (weekly,monthly pay makes no difference)

If they have messed this up anything else you need to ask?
consultation, process, selection, alternative positions all been done corretly?

Thank You getmore4less - I started 20th August 2007, I am paid monthly (last working day).

Don't think there's anything else I need to ask.

Thanks again everyone - you rock !

Just a thought and I'm not sure if any one else has addressed this:

I understand that your employers have said that there is no need for you to work the notice period. Presumably, this means that you will be paid your notice period plus any redundancy payment. In this case, the bright side of this situation is that you'll have a month of paid time to start the job-hunt.

Speaking from my experience, when I was made redundant the contract specified 3 months of notice. But the former employer paid us for the 3 months in advance plus redundancy and allowed us to walk off on the last day before the notice period kick off.

    Good luck with the job-hunt.
