Not on Transco Network

Hi there. I'm new to the forum but a regular reader of the moneysavingexpert site .:D

I have a query which has been bugging me for a long time. I have tried to change my gas supplier before (using the method suggested by Martin in his article) but as soon as my prospective new supplier finds out I am not on the TRANSCO network they hike their prices up or even say they can't supply me with gas.

My house is on a housing estate that was built 6 years ago and a private company (not transco) owns the gas supply - I'm not on the transco network.

Has anyone else had the same problem and is there any way around this?

Many thanks.

My estate is the same i pay 12p per day (£44 per yr.) to Southern( I am with EBICO) for what is called "use of system charge".
This must be taken into consideration when you change suppliers.
Some companies do not charge for this, BG. is one of them, there was another post on this subject naming others.

    hi Derek_A

I was thinking of switching to Ebico, and sent them an email recently asking them about IGT charges. They replied to say there were none allegedly.

But I had also contacted Southern Electric last month enquiring about switching to them, and they advised there was no charge for IGT, but then added there was a 7p per day 'System usage charge' - something to do with my GTC gas meter.

Did you discover the unexpected 12p a day system usage charge before or after you had switched to Ebico?

Also, is the unit price of IGT gas you pay the same as for a Transco connected Ebico customer?

    Hi Bill,
I only found out when i changed to Ebico, i shall be speaking to them about this charge, by the way of course the 12p does not include the Vat which Southern put on top.
If you buy your gas from BG they do not charge for the IGT

I'm aware BG and EDF(dual fuel) do not charge for IGT.

I've done my own calculations using the new tariffs from ScotPower, PowerGen, and EDF using all available dual fuel/online/monthly direct debit discounts. To my surprise the annual bills worked out more or less the same with only a £20 difference on an average figure of £750 pa for my energy consumption.

BG haven't published their new prices on their website and Southern Electric will probably be raising their prices in January as they have a 6mth promise not to raise prices since their last rise in May. Using these company's current tariffs, they are not much different to what I pay to ScotPowerOnline under their previous tariff.

Ebico's new tariff does work out £40 cheaper if they do charge 12p a day System Usage Charge based on your experience. (ScotPower IGT charge works out at 10p a day)

I was hoping for larger savings but I suppose a saving of £40 is better than nothing.

I've sent another email to Ebico regarding System usage charges. Not heard back from them yet.
