Perhaps the engineer should have gone away and got another set top box and tried that before giving up and leaving me to own his problem.

The outcome would have been the same anyway even if it had been connected to the phone line, since the call back would not have worked.

This could have been the appalling quality of the phone line, something which we could do nothing about. Except move one mile back into a cabled area. Which we did

Agreed - he should have done this to make sure it wasn't a faulty box.
