Free Phone Connection?

Does anyone know of any deals that would get me a free land line connection, rather than paying ~£124 to BT for the privilege?

At the moment I am undecided between going for Sky or Virgin Media bundle packages and would prefer to stick with Virgin for their broadband, but have noticed that with one of the Sky HD packages they are offering free broadband up to 20MB speeds but it needs a BT phone line.

Now I have a BT phone line installed already but to be honest it is messy!! The line has been there for at least 20 years and has been cut so many times that I dont know whats an extension lead and whats an original. I also have a "fresh" VirginMedia phone line but its unconnected and as far as I can tell you cant have ADSL on a VM phone line.

What I would like to do is, remove ALL the lines and then get a fresh BT line installed so that I can avail of the new internet speeds as I have been told the lines are so old I can only expect around 3MB.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
A.

BT,s free connection offer was superseded by a £29.99 connection offer which is the cheapest around. Its a 18 month contract and does require you to place a minimum amount of calls via BT.

It'd be cheaper to get a good local electrician in to sort out the wiring for that exisitng BT line (my son does that sort of thing for pin money at weekends).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

A 'new' BT line won't get you a brand new cable back to the street cabinet, if there is an existing physical connection that is usable then that's what they will connect to. As advised above, you just need to sort out your extension wiring or connect your router direct to the master NTE5 socket if you have one.
Subject to that, distance from the exchange is more likely to determine what speed you can get, if you want more than your location can support then your only option is to go for VM cable instead of ADSL, if you can live with their traffic management.

Apparently Sky will currently connect a phone line for £25 (according to their website). Cheaper and better than the BT offer as BT is 18 month contract and charges if you don't make a certain amount of calls.

But BT dont require to you take a expensive digital subscription to get it.

"If you are a new Sky TV customer taking Sky Talk Calls and Sky Talk Line Rental, we can arrange for a new phone line to be installed or an existing phone line to be activated (“New Phone Line”). We will confirm the charge (if any) for your New Phone Line at the time of booking. Sky will not install a New Phone Line where extensive new line construction over and above standard needs is required. "

But is it for new customers or just those who want to drop their TV service.
