I am bit confused with car Tax disc renewal. Few dates are as following which will help to understand the problem.

Tax disc renewal date: 30th June 2010
Insurance renewal date: 27th June 2010
MOT valid till 15th July 2010.

The question is can I still buy Tax disc(from post office as online) in June 2010 using new insurance and current MOT certificate as MOT will be still valid when I buy new tax disc? Or I have to get new MOT before I apply for tax disc?

would really appreciate help as I always used to get MOT in june before buying tax disc and this year I am thinking that way my MOT is valid for just 11 month !!! which is not good for MS !!

Two things to put your mind at rest.
Your MOT valid until july 15 is OK to get your tax renewed on 30 june.
Secondly you can have a MOT to run for up to 13 months, and as they are now recorded online I do not think you have to take the old certificate with you.
That is you can have your MOt done after June 15 and it will expire on July 15 (as long as that is when your current one expires)

You need to have valid insurance on the date that the new tax disc starts on. My sister tried to get new tax online last week to start from 1st June but was unable to as her insurance ran out on the 29th May.

    Can I make a suggestion?

Although not quite money saving, I would buy just 6 months car tax this time and then in 6 months buy it for 12 months and then continue on a yearly basis. That way you don't have the prospect of the cost of the car tax at the same time as the MOT & insurance. I have always offset mine and it works ok, especially if the MOT brings up work that also needs to be paid for.

The MOT is fine, it is the insurance that will be a problem.

If you do it online, even if you renewed prior to the 27th, the database does not update immediately, and unless it has then it will not let you renew. Obviously you could still go to the Post Office with the new insurance certificate, but that won't be fun at the end of the month. Which was why I did exactly as socks_uk suggested, and bought 6 months tax for one year to put them out of step.

I recommend choosing an insurance company that can email the certificate to you in .pdf format that you can print yourself. Mine does that, the email arrives within an hour and it's a godsend considering our sod awful postal service.

But that still doesn't help taxing it online.

Anyway, I find it easier and significantly cheaper to use a local broker who prints off the certificate and hands it to you.
