If you're thinking of selling your house in the next few years then be very careful with bamboo, some mortgage companies will refuse a mortgage if the property has a certain type of the stuff as it can damage the house.

Does it make a difference how close to the building the plant is?
Or does it just have to be anywhere on the property to get yourself penalised?

It's only the notorious Japanese Knotweed which could be problematic in a survey, not bamboo. Bamboo is a wonderful screening plant, with root barriers it poses no problems.
