New flat, Sky Digital, Talk talk vs BT

Hi everyone.
I'm sorry if there is a clear answer to this but I've been trudging through the threads and not found it yet.
As first time buyers, we are moving into a flat tomorrow. I know that the previous owner was on Talk Talk. Our position is that we don't really use the landline but we need broadband and will be getting Sky Digital at some point. Both Sky and Talk talk apparently provide free broadband so it's all rather confusing as to what would be the best thing for us to do.
We'd be grateful for some advice so that we can get on the net asap. What would you all suggest we do?
Many thanks.

I'd take TalkTalk of your list, unless you want nothing but 18 months of problems.
If you are having Sky Digital, and you are after free broadband, then I'd go with Sky's broadband over a BT line.
The great thing about Sky's broadband is your line rental remains with BT and you can therefore use cheap calls providers, such as Primus 2 to give you free evening and weekend calls for no monthly fee and then also 1899 for daytime (or anytime) calls at 3 pence each. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Thanks BexTech. That gives us some good food for thought.
The only reason that Talk Talk was on my mind was because the previous owner was on it, so wouldn't it just be convenient to use it. But I've heard about the nightmares associated with it so I guess we may as well avoid it.
So, when we move in tomorrow, we would still have to get on to BT wouldn't we to get the BT connection wouldn't we, even though we'll then sign on with Sky.0 -
Yeah, you just call BT. If you call first thing in the morning the line should be enabled before midday.
Once you have a BT line, you can then get Sky to supply the broadband, though it may take a week or two for the broadband system to recognise your new line. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... You're a godsend BexTech. I didn't think anyone would be listening at this time! So much to do tomorrow, we need all the help we can get!0

With both Sky and TalkTalk to get the free broadband you need to be on one of their LLU enabled exchanges, if you aren't on an LLU exchange you will have to pay a monthly fee for, until they enable your exchange.
For a list of enabled exchanges see: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/llu-league.php?status=2&type=&sortfield=ex.name&sortorder=ASC&type=easynetIt's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... If you are going to get sky anyway, you get free broadband & for an extra £5 a month unlimited uk landline calls 24/7. Works out cheaper than talk talk, which is £19.99 for broadband, unlimited calls & landline. HTH, goodluck
No one said it was gonna be easy!0 -
IF your exchange is enabled (mine isn't and, being rural, probably won't be).shays_mum wrote:If you are going to get sky anyway, you get free broadband.........Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
