Hi to all , Quick background info , my wife and i have been out of work on income support for 2 years due to medical reasons , however i now feel as if i could return to work and have been lucky to find a job paying £15.000 per year which i am due to start in the next week, my wife however is still very ill and unable to return to work in the near future, we currently get income support at £280.00 per fortnight and full council tax and rent paid. Our claim is a joint one in my wifes name and i will be coming off it will she need to make a fresh claim and if so would she still receive benefit of any kind ? or will they just remove my name and adjust the payment accordingly. Is there any help available for returning to work after such a long time off , ie clothes for work , grants etc any answers would be great, many thanks.

Your income is too high (or will be) for her to claim income support.

As a couple you are claiming income support and that will totally stop and she cant make a single claim.

Did your wife work before she became ill?

Remember to update housing benefit about your change in circumstance about your new income and that income support has stopped and they will send you out your new award detailing how much you need to now pay. Im guessing full or almost full rent you will need to pay on that income

As far as I know there are grants awarded for clothes as you have been on benefit a while, although I am not sure if that covers IS as well as JSA. I there is also some sort of 'run on' woth some benefits where they carry on for a month after you start your new job. I am sure someone with more knowledge than me can advise you of this and as to whether you will continue to be eligible for HB and CTB. Would your wife be eligible for DLA? This can be paid whther you are earning or not-it depends on how much care she needs or wether she has mobility problems.

Maybe entitled to some working tax credits? Also well done getting back to work. I was off 18 months with depression and though its still a struggle some days, it's the best thing i could have done.
