Toolbar problems

Hoping somebody can help.

Whilst my OH was using my laptop yesterday, a warning come up saying laptop was infected and recommended that software was installed to protect it. Not sure what website it was but since then a toolbar has been installed called 'protection bar' from https://www.protectionbar.com. This hasn't been installed by us and I cannot get rid of it.

Has anybody got any suggestions.

Thanks

yes, this is a false indication of an infection, they are trying to get you to buy the software to "cure" it

take a read of this and follow the steps about downloading the software part while I look up this precise infection

    right found it here

    http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm

Download Roguefix.bat from HERE and save it to your desktop. (Windows XP only)
This tool is regularly updated, current version 1.53 (updated 23rd August 06)

Some users are reporting seeing a text page as opposed to the download box when using this link, if this happens to you, click your browsers back button and try again.

    Removal procedure

    a)
Set Windows to 'Show hidden files and folders How to.

    b) Restart your PC in Safe Mode How to.

    c) Double click on the roguefix.bat icon on your desktop and allow the tool to run. Follow the onscreen prompts, you will be given the option of resetting your Desktop background and your Homepage back to the Windows default settings.

while in safe mode follow the steps in the first thread I posted for you

so before booting into safemode download Ewido, Ad-aware, Spybot and ccleaner as it tells you in the first part of the thread and then run them AFTER running Roguefix.

Pleas do not follow instructions from anyone else apart from me, Pchelpman or Alfonso from this point

  • Right done that (suprised myself there!!!) and the toolbar has now gone. Do I need to go back into hidden files and put that back to how it was?

as that infection opens a door to other infections that it installs on your Pc compromising the security on the Laptop, it's most important that you do this as soon as possible !
