Hotel comparison sites

We recently took a mid-week 2 day stay in London and having chosen our hotel based on internet research, then looked for the lowest booking price based on using many of the sites recommended by MoneySavingExpert. We eventually booked directly with the hotel web site as this was 10% cheaper than any of the comparison sites, and half the price of some of the so called cheapest hotel booking sites. Why does MoneySavingExpert recommend these obviously uncompetitive sites?

First its dangerous to assume that your one off trend is the same for everyone.
In fact often booking direct from the hotel is far more expensive than booking through a comparison site.
However, the article
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-hotels#sameroom
does in very large letters say
Step 1: Check the hotels own price
Step 2: Use a comparison site
As my suggestion is to do both just in case.

Good advice! YES! I AGREE, I ALWAYS MAKE A GREAT SAVING ON HOTELS IN THIS COUNTRY, MORE THAN ANY OTHER COMPARISON SITE, JUST BY USING TELETEX TV. FOR INSTANCE 1 STAY AT THE CROWNPLAZA LONDON WOULD COST 69 POUNDS A NIGHT PP ON A COMPARISON SITE
, I ALWAYS PAY £39 PER ROOM, 4 IN A ROOM, IN ALL OF THE PRIORITY CLUB HOTELS USING TELETEX TV
.
THERE ARE SOME HOTELS THAT ARE NOT EVEN MENTIONED ON MOST COMPARISON SITES.0
