Just part the way through Spendaholics and it is the same on thing.
1) Person owes most of the money to their parents, never really going to pay it back.
2) They put the people on "cold turkey", with a silly sum of money £10 tonight, they are never going to do it longterm!!!!!!!!
3) The people blag stuff from their friends, ie meals, drinks, nights out, who has friends that will do this longterm
4) This guy tonight, earns nothing, owes his mum 19k and the Jay says he can have £50 per month for eating out - that is what I get a month for my actual shopping, not fillet steak!
5) The people don't really ever seem to have a proper lightbulb moment - I bet if they went back to the people that they have on less then half would have changed his ways.
The only good thing is the therapy bit, which I'm only jealous of really, but even that is sometimes too soft.
Just wanted to moan.

I love this programme, I like the way that they do get them to make changes in the long run - maybe not fantastic, but any improvement is better than nothing?Quit smoking 18/08/070

Hell, I'd love £50 per month to spend on going out :eek:No longer using this account for new posts from 20130

Tonight's was an OK episode - thankfully the chap realised that £1,200 for a week's holiday was a bit much!
But I agree, why still £50 a month on going out?! Give him a fiver and tell him to enjoy a McDonalds! That's what OH and I do when we want a meal out - Drive-thru McDs and a sit in the car park watching the world go by! (we also do meal mystery shops which is good fun!)
But I just hope he truly does realise how much stress he's put his mum under and I hope the £150 paybacks keep coming!Official DFW Nerd Club #20  Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

The concept of the programme is great and makes good TV but sometimes the people just want to make my blood boil, the guy last night drank drinks that cost £8 a go, and I can really see him going back to his mum and borrowing back all the cash that he has paid her back! When he got a payrise he merely saw this as extra money to spend and not to throw at his debts or save and I don't beleive for one moment he is "putting away" money for his tax and NI.
Maybe someone should introduce him and some of the others who "star" on the programme to this site.0 -
I stopped watching it as I saw one a few weeks ago where Jay took the "contestant" to borough market ( fancy posh food hall for those non londoners" and said " you can get the same buzz from spending 2.50 on a loaf of bread here as spending in a resturaunt blah blah"
Im suprised DFWs up the land didnt hear me shouting " 2.50 on one loaf, bloody mental, and she calls this advice " Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I like watching it, but must admit I find it laughable at the size of the holiday, clothes, gadgets and other little budgets that they set for people. I think it is also interesting that they never say how long it will take them to pay off their debts. I mean, if I had a clothes, holiday and gadgets budget it would probably take me years longer to pay my debt off, but through cutting back in the short term, it gets paid off quicker.
I think it important to bear in mind that it is, at the end of the day, it is a TV show with carefully selected people.Official DFW Nerd #148

I agree it is really irritating to watch the people who have just borrowed money off mum or dad and will never stop doing it. The councelling bit is quite good though but I agree the cold turkey is silly when their friends just buy them everything. The most annoying thing is some of the episodes where Jay gets them to clear out their clothes and take it all to a charity shop. All ncie expensive desginer label stuff that would make a fortune on Ebay. I think in the later episodes she does get them to sell on Ebay but the early ones she didn't what a waste.Moved to Denmark for FIRE by Aug 2025 “May your decisions reflect your hopes not your fears”

I watch it when i catch it on, which isn't that often, but i agree that for the most part it is annoying. As much as these people often have huge money problems they are the sort of people who could always sort it out quickly if they wanted to.
I want to see some real people on there who not only have real money problems but also lots of other issues which make paying of a debt that bit harder. Plus the budgets are often either to nice or to difficult for the person to keep up for the three or four years.
I want realistic people not young idiots with soft touch parents ( a generalisation i know). Must be nice to be able to borrow thousands of mummy and daddy:rolleyes:
I also think going back a month or so later is a laugh, they should go back a year later and then we would really know if there had been a difference.Success means having to worry about every thing in the world......EXCEPT MONEY. Johnny Cash
