I have just got rid of Mcaffee and all my issues with slowness have gone too. I have read on here that some of you do not like it but doubted it. Is it only a problem for some computers? Surely if it slowed down 80% or more they could never sell it.

It's not that McAfee just slows down the computer, installing all the unnecessary services Mcafee security centre, virus and firewall is all that is needed.

Other factors will be the specification of the computer how much memory, cpu etc it has will effect the computers performance not forgetting how much other junk is installed. So no one can really blame mcafee saying that it slows my computer down.

McAfee and Norton sell more than any others because a) they come pre-installed by the big PC producers such as Dell, and b) because they spend a very high proportion of their budget marketing their products.
Ask any non-tecchie person to name a couple of AV programs and the odds are they've heard of Norton and McAfee.

If it performed what its supposed to do 'well' (Which is stop nasties from infecting your computer) id partially overlook the fact it slows computers down. As it is, its an overpriced bag of ****

I'm forced to put up with it on my work 'office' laptop.... over the last 4 months or so it seems to have markedly stepped up its resource hogging with the last few 'engine updates', i guess whether it actually gets any better stopping any viruses remaines to be seen.

you'd never catch it on any of my personal machines :)

Why not? Norton got away with it for nearly a decade, trading on the name they built for themselves in the 1990's.

The "Peter Norton", of Norton Utilities fame (I still use his TS.EXE file text search from Jan 1989!), name was bought up by what is now Symantec in 1990. I don't believe he had any involvement from then on, other than (perhaps!) having his photo on some of their software boxes.
