Caddy for Hard Drive?

Options
Hi, I need to get some data from a hard drive from an old machine (the drive is out and the old PC gone) onto a new machine and i've heard that a caddy will do this via USB?

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 ATA/133 - 3.5 series if that helps?

Any ideas as to where I can get a caddy that would suit this and does it matter what sort of hard drive I have now as I don't know what kind of HDD is in this machine now?

    - assuming you now have an a~n~other puter
    - the odds are you can strap the old drive into your new puter [ desktop not lappie ] to get the info off, no cost / no caddy needed !

Amazon is a good place to look for a caddy. Make sure the caddy handles the old ATA interface as well as the current SATA.

You can use Device Manager to check the HD in your current machine, and find out whether that is ATA or SATA.

If your current machine is an ATA desktop, then as Richie suggests you may be able to attach the old drive to your current machine, and copy off the data without having to get a suitable caddy.

If you have a spare IDE/ATA interface in your computer, simply connect the Maxtor and away you go.

Device Manager will let you know if you have any IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers, and which ones are spare.

  • Thanks for your replies.

I don't have any spare banks for any more hard drives as a friend put a second hard drive in, so I have to go the caddy route and he's away on his hols so can't ask him at the moment.

In Device Manager it looks like I have a SATA hard drive.

So for the Maxtor I need a caddy that handles ATA and SATA?

For the Maxtor, an ATA caddy (or USB adaptor) will suffice

If you have a spare PCI slot, you can get a PCI-SATA adaptor and hook it up internally to that......

    OR

You can take the second HDD out and put the one you're talking about here in its place - as long as you don't want to copy your data directly between these two.

If you plan to use the caddy just for the Maxtor, the caddy needs only to be ATA. But if the caddy is also SATA, you have the option to use it in the future for a larger and faster SATA hard drive.

I bought one of these recently for doing the same thing .. not a caddy though!

Startech USB to IDE/SATA Adapter Cable .. http://www.startech.com/item/USB2SATAIDGB-USB-to-IDE-SATA-Adapter.aspx

Works well enough , I think ebuyer/dabs/amazon do them .. others too most likely!
