My sister has a place in Elterwater, which is a lovely village in the Langdale Valley, not far from Ambleside. The Eltermere Inn (www.eltermere.co.uk) is a lovely country hotel with great views. It used to be a terrible B&B, but was sold to a new couple who have completely transformed it, great food, huge log fireplace, good beer and in a secluded spot. It also has the benefit of not being well known as the transformation has only recently occured - I have no doubt in 2 years time once word gets around you'll have to book months in advance. However within walking distance is the Britannia Inn, a very nice pub that serves ok food and beyond that is Langdale Country Club (www.landgale.co.uk) a 4 star timeshare resort and hotel with lots of facilities - 3 restaurants, 3 bars, swimming pool, health spa, tennis court, mountain bike hire etc etc.
And the best thing is you'll never need to leave the village as there are hundreds of great walks on your doorstep.
There will be lots of places like this in the Lakes, I just happen to know this one - been going to Elterwater since I was child many many years ago.
If you want to do it on a MonaySavingExpert budget, there is also a campsite within walking distance of the village which has the most amazing views down the valley - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=22350 -

We are also planning a trip to the Lake District, at the end of August.
Any recommendations for accomodation that has family rooms please?
(I've had a look at all the recommendations mentioned so far)Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -

A lot of people coming from the south head for Windermere first. Personally I wouldn't recommend that, far too busy and far too touristy.
You can't go far wrong on a first visit by starting in Keswick, and it might be good to base yourself there too. For me, living in Newcastle, Keswick has always equalled the Lake District for me! Heading south from there Grasmere is a lovely little village as is Ambleside but a little bigger.
Keep in mind that during the school holidays everywhere in the Lakes, except perhaps the western Lake District will be insanely busy. Don't expect to get any car parking spaces in any town at any time! Nor expect to get through Ambleside without a 2 hour traffic jam! Personally we tend to visit there in Spring or Autumn when the crowds aren't so bad.0 -
The main lakes towns have TERRIBLE parking problems, so bear that in mind too. Check your accommodation has its own parking.0
