leef beet question

I have some leef beet growing from last year which is going to seed so I thought I would pull it all up and make a soup out of the the last of the leaves today.
As I was pulling it out I noticed it has large roots which look like parsnips and I wondered if they are edible. I have tried googling but its just the leaves that are talked about on the sites.
Does anyone know if they are edible and if so have you cooked anything out of the roots?

I'm afraid I don't know the answer either but I'd be interested to read any replies. I have planted some perpetual spinach out today and I read in my veggie book that this is actually a sort of beetroot - called spinach beet. It says there are two types of leeaf beet: swiss chard and spinach beet. It says nothing about eating the roots though I'm afraid.
