Boiler Help

Hi all,

an enginer from national grid came and replaced the Gas meter free of cost as the previous meter was old. he said that our boiler is leaking and closed the line and put a tag.

we have never experienced a gas leak and he says cause the air is passed out thru the vent may be we never realised it. i called a corgi registered guy and he says since its a gas leak he suspects it's the Gas valve which is gone and want's to chk out if the valve is available as our boiler is old.

can anyone suggest me what going on? Can anyone let me know what's the cost gonna be like or should i replace my boiler if so what that gonna cost me.

please please help me......

  • i dont know a great deal about boilers but if you have a leak inside the boiler i would be very suppriesed if it was the gas valve as this is what lets the gas into the boiler i think. you could go down an expensive road of replacing parts and paying labour charges. if your boiler is over 10 years old i would be inclined to change your boiler. i would imagine that a new condensing boiler would cost you around 1000 pounds fitted for a decent boiler like worcester borsch or ferolli. i hope i have been of some help

if the gas valve goes on a boiler, it won't ignite - I don't know of any boiler on the market that would leak gas if the gas valve went.
the next mystery is why your gas board even condemned your boiler.. did they check any other gas appliance in your home if you have one?
If there is a leak in your house, Transco are the people to call, they will detect it and do the appropraite thing for free - then call your local Corgi engineer to investigate their findings.

    thanks for your comments.

i agree with skiduck. we have never smelled gas in the house and the only other eqpt. run on gas is the cooker and he claims that's not leaking. he did a check thru the gas meter and claims theirs a leak as the pressure was dropping on his gauge.

he has shut the line to the boiler and put a tag. can i reopen the line moreover as skiduck said the boiler is working properly and ignites without any problem.

i just cheched and it looks like transco is now know as national grid and it's the national grid's engineer who claims gas leak from the boiler and shut the line.

  • I have had experience of the gas valve leaking on my boiler. The valve was stuck open causing the gas to fill the chamber and vent to the outside via the flue. As wall mounted boilers are normally of the room sealed balanced flue type, any gas leaking past the gas valve cannot leak into the room.
The CORGI engineer that came out said that this type of fault is quite common, which surprised me as I would have thought these gas valves would always fail safe. Obviously I was wrong.
