Bizarre dilemma!

My Visa Debit card was used for fraudulent payments about 2 months ago and the bank were fantastic repaying the almost £1500 from two fraudulent transactions.
My dilemma is that the retailer (a large national insurance company) that was charged from my account fraudulently, has also repaid about £1200 of this to me direct.
I contacted them direct when I received confirmation of a fraudulent insurance policy that had been paid for in a fake name but with my address and details. I explained that the fraud dept from the bank was involved and that I did not want my details kept on their file. Unfortunately, the person I was speaking to did not speak English well at all and I'm not sure they really understood the issue. They have now refunded this money.
What to do?

Contact your bank - they have dealt honestly with you and deserve the same courtesy back, explain the situation and see what they say.

You should contact your bank as soon as possible. Technically they are the ones that are out of pocket and should be reimbursed now that you have your money back from the Insurance Company. If you speak to them they will just be able to take it back out of your account. If you don't let them know it will look very unfavourably on you if you ever run into this kind of dilema again.

As above, if you do nothing you'll be making a profit from fraud. Get in touch with your bank.

I have contacted the bank who to be honest were not interested and advised me to contact insurance co direct.
I have let them know and they have not replied to date. I have no intention of keeping the money but I'm struggling to give it back to relevant organisation!

if i were you, i'd give it 6 months of trying to get either bank or insurance to take it back - if they dont i'd find a worthy charity and pass it onto them!

And then if they come looking for it after that......?
I have a deep burning indifference

Keep the funds in the account for 6 years and 1 day together with all correspondence showing you tried to contact insurance company about this.
If they don't claim it back within this timescale then consider it yours.
To prove that you are serious about contacting them send one letter by a trackable method - keep the receipt for this.

If they do ask for it back and you have incurred costs in contacting them you have a right to ask for those costs to be refunded.
