Mobile contract with ex

in Credit cards
Hi
My brother has recently split up with his girlfriend. He had (foolishly!) got a mobile phone contract in his name, which she was responsible for paying for. Last month she bounced the direct debit for the phone, which will obviously impact on his credit! It lasts for another 15 months! Is there ANY way he can get out of it?!
Thanks in advance for any help!

I doubt that he can get out of the contract - after all it is HIS contract.
Any dispute is between him and the ex, the mobile provider has no interest.
However, he could report the phone as lost, have the sim blocked, and have the new sim delivered to his house. At least that way he, or a member of his family, will be able to get some use out of it.
Also some providers will allow you to reduce the tariff after a certain length of time, so it is worth discussing that with the provider one he gets the new sim.

He will have to set up a new direct debit and pay for the phone himself....I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

Same thing happen with my daughter, she bought a contract phone for her then boyfriend's birthday, he dumped her 4 days later, he kept phone and has constantly gone over the monthly allowance since January. She refused to end the contract, she hoped they'd "GET BACK TOGETHER". Thankfully, she's seen the light and bought herself out of the contract. The final bill was £20.45+vat for extra calls over this month's allowance and £25+vat for ending contract early.0

Tell the mobile phone company the truth - ie the SIM card is not in the hands of the person that signed the contract and that the person who has it is no longer authorised to have it. Then as reported they should be able to block the SIM and send a new one.
Don't invent a story about it being lost or stolen.0 -

Personally I'd want the phone barring too - why should anyone get a free handset at my expense.
Having said that I wouldn't be daft enough to sign a contract for anyone anymore. I did this once (about 12 years ago) and ended up with a mobile phone contract I hadn't bargained on. Fortunately you only make this mistake once!0 -

only £25 + vat to terminate early? That's actually really good - can I ask what network? (presume it hadn't virtually ended already?)0
