Cheap stuff to do/see in Newquay

Hi everyone,
We are off on a Sun holiday at the end of June to Newquay, we are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children, 14 and 6. I've had a look on the internet for some stuff to do with them, but as there is a quite an age difference it's hard to find things that they both like. Doesn't have to be in Newquay as we will have the car with us and are willing to travel. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

You can go mackeral fishing out of newquay for around a fiver and there are sea lions out there which you can spot and feed too. Its not a bad boat trip even if you aren't into fishing
Beaches obviously if the weather is good, it's the best thing about the area.
Dairyland is good fun for younger ones, just outside Newquay, big indoor play area too which surprisingly alot of older children and adults really enjoy. You pay once and can return for the rest of your week too.0 -
Go into the shop and flick through the local papers, Cornish Guardian usually has a full page of "money off" vouchers for places like Sea Life Centre.
For eating out, The Fort, very large child-friendly pub in the centre of town with massive garden overlooking the whole bay. The food there is a reasonable cost and the menu's huge.
Go to the Tourist Information Centre and pick up a Newquay Discovery Trail Map - then you can walk round that. It's a free leaflet and you're looking for metal discs on the floor that tell a story about that bit/area. Time needed: 1-2 hours.
On Killacourt (big bit of grass overlooking the Island/Sea Life Centre/Towan Beach) near the fence at the top of the cliff there's a "body shadow sundial" - stand on it and you can tell the time from your shadow. You should be able to fit this in on the Discovery Trail, it's only 100 yards from the TIC and between disc 1 and disc 2. Total time needed: 4 minutes.
There are a few Pitch N Putt courses in the town. I think there's one near the Zoo, there's one alongside the golf club on Tower Road, there's one half way down the track down to Tolcarne Beach and there's one on Killacourt.
If it's raining, you're stuck. There's nothing indoors except pubs, shops and about 3 amusement arcades.
For swimming, there are two pools. One down near the zoo and 2 miles out of town at Hendra campsite there's one that has flumes and stuff.
The boating lake is free to sit and watch, down by the zoo. You can hire little boats down there. There's also horse riding/stables, and they take you across the estuary/beach, but that's pricey!
There are two pretty cr4ppy car boot sales up near Hendra, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday I think. There are big signs at the field entrance (entry by/on Morrisons roundabout) telling you which days/time.
About 20 miles west of Newquay, check out the Gold Centre between the A30 and Portreath. Huge car park, free entry. They sell lots of gold stuff, but there are things to look at too. e.g. you can pan for gold, or make a teddy bear, or paint a pot; there's £1million in £5 notes; you can see the Cornish crown jewels and find out how much your weight is in gold. They also have a car there to look at - over the years I remember there being: an old mini covered in old pennies, the Aston Martin from Goldfinger, the Back to the Future DeLorean. Time: 1 hour MAX
Go to Padstow, or Wadebridge, or Bodmin - and walk the Camel Trail (free).0 -
Thank you for all the replies, I will look into all of them, I would be happy spending most of the holiday at the beach (weather permitting) but my 2 boys get bored on the beach after a couple of hours. We have so far agreed that we will spend half a day at the beach and then visit the Zoo, and a visit to Dairyland, but so far that is it. OH fancies a trip to the Eden Project but think we are leaving that until the day we leave and visit it on our drive home0
