Charges on the Use of access numbers on landline

I have been using access numbers to make calls from my landline. I am with One Tel (now Talk Talk). I have noticed that One tel charge an additional 10% on top of the access charge rate (this is before VAT). I seem to remember Martin writing somethin about it in the last few months. I think that he wrote that One Tel should not do so. Can anyone remember or direct me to what Martin wrote?

Thanks

Welcome to the MSE forums musty.

Sorry to say, they can charge extra.

If your line rental is still with BT, use the 1280 prefix to send your calls via them instead.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Thanks Heinz

My line rental is not with BT it is with One Tel. Does that mean they can still charge extra. If I were to change my line rental back to BT, would BT charge as well?
    Thanks

That is why OneTel are charging you extra because you pay linerental to them.

If you transfer your linerental to BT, then no matter what company you use for your calls you can then just dial 1280 which would route the call via BT.

BT are the only network that has to allow access to and can't discriminate against other telephone providers. Other networks (like OneTel, TT, etc) can block access or even charge you an excess premium as they see fit.

The problem you have is because your linerental is with OneTel then it's not as straight forward as moving linerental to BT. The reason being is that when you ask BT to move linerental then your calls are automatically moved to them as well which can take upto about 2 weeks. Then once you're on BT, you then move your calls only (via CPS) to any provider you choose which will take about another 2 weeks.

With BT you can have free Caller display and greater choice of phone companies/access providers to choose from.

Depending on what services you have with OneTel/TT (ie - do you have TT's free broadband) then their are more and generally cheaper options available to you.

If you post back with more info on what type of numbers you ring (geogrpahical 01/02 numbers, 084x/087x, mobile 07x) and when you generally make them then we can advise further. Alternatively, try Martin's article here.

For example, you can have free inclusive evening & weekend calls to geographical 01/02 numbers without paying a monthly fee (via Primus), and use another provider for daytime calls, etc.

    Thanks!! Great help

To answer your questions, I do not have broadband with TT. I use the access codes to call UK landlines, UK mobiles and International Mobiles and landlines.

    Cheers

In which case, move your line rental back to BT (click below to see what options you'll GAIN).
