alternative to glass

Hi all,
I'm trying to replace a door glass part where the glass has been removed so that noise can travel as I can't hear any calls etc from other parts of the house.
I was thinking of something like radiator covers where it would had cuts so that I can hear others and at the same time see who is entering via the dining room.
I was wondering if anyone had any alternative ideas as the radiator cover sheets that I looked at today in Homebase seemed very dear and wouldn't be wide enough to fit in the existing glass frame of the door.
Sorry that I can't explain myself properly.
TIA

thin polycarbonate, acrylic or perspex sheet from ebay or homebase / wickes / b+q may work.
custom louvre type arrangement using those materials to allow you to see through but also hear perhaps?"Gold is the money of kings; silver is the money of gentlemen; barter is the money of peasants; but debt is the money of slaves." - Norm Franz0 -

Sorry, I can't because the kitchen is almost vertical the front door of the house so when front door is left open especially in summer-the public can see whats cooking up.lolAssalamu alaikum. May Allahs blessings be upon you0 -

Hi,
Are the polycarbonate/acrylic etc see through?
Also exactly what is custom louvre type arrangement and where can I get hold of this from.
Thank you.

polycarb / acrylic etc are see through. they can also be found coloured I think.
Louvre arrangement is hard to describe, so here's some pictures.

When I said custom, I meant DIY... someone with a router or someone skilled with a chisel would be able to carve channels for the glazing material to sit in diagonally, leaving small gaps for sound and air.
Another option would be to have wooden verticals in the frame for your glazed area then use slats of transparent glazing material mounted on alternating sides so they overlap a little vertically. Not sure if I'm being clear here, you'd end up with half the glazing slats on one side, half on the other with vertical gaps for air and sound but when viewed from the front door it would appear to be a full pane of glass with lines across it.
link to a picture of overlapped planks, which doesn't help at all... but if you picture some sort of strut between the planks then it may help illustrate.
