This is probably a silly question but I am going to ask it anyway
Our daughter lives with us at the moment. She has a 2 year old son. She claims Income Support, CTC & gets CB. She is at the end of her final year at college.
My question is.... Can we charge her rent and her put in a claim for HB?
Please don't antsy with me - I don't really know anything about benefits

She gets a load more than she needs anyway. I get the same, around £150 or so a week against £65 if you are single without a child. No way do 2 year old kids cost £85 a week !
Where is the kid's father ? Why isn't he helping out ?
As for HB/LHA, I'm fairly certain she cannot claim when living with family but to be honest, the system provides loads more than anyone really needs in her position.0 -

no she cannot claim rent from housing benefit but she should be paying her way from the benefits she receives....yes if she was in her own place she may get rent and council tax help but she would still have to use the income she has today to pay for gas, electric, phone, food etc so she should be contributing0 -
She is living with and would be paying rent to a close relative. You can charge her rent (why are you not at present?) but she cant claim HB. Imagine the Benefits bill if all sons and daughters who lived with their parents could claim HB!!!
The simple answer is No.0 -
You can't charge your daughter rent in order to claim LHA (housing benefit).
If you can't afford for your daughter to live with you she will be entitled to LHA to privately rent her own place.
If you look at this site https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/Secure/LHARateSearch.aspx?SearchType=PostCode it gives you the rate for your area.I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.

Thanks for all your replies.
I was asking the question because she gets everything in her own right because of her son. We don't get anything for her at all yet we still have to pay out for her. As I said above, I know nothing about the benefits system with regard to HB, etc. I understand that she would get HB if she was in her own place but I just wondered how it worked if she was still at home.0 -
There is nothing to stop you charging her rent and her paying it out of her benefits.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

No actually, you don't have to pay everything out for her - that is what her benefits are for! She needs to be paying her own way - maybe free rent but a share of the bills and food etc should come out of her benefits.0

Her benefits cover her food, electric, heating, clothing, washing machine costs, water rates, cost of furniture, decorating, carpets, soft furnishing etc.
What on earth are the costs that you "pay out for her" that she cannot cover?0
