OH dropped their laptop a few weeks ago and it is bust.
If I take the hard drive out of a laptop will that get rid of any personal info/data etc?

YESAt times any combination of my spelling, grammar or punctuation may be incorrect. Please do not pick me up for this as, after all, it is only an internet forum.0 -
its a bit drastic when there are free programs to wipe it.0

I would always keep it..
Hard Drives are personal things..0 -
It wont power up properl. The thing got dropped and is now bust.0

If you have no way of firing it up to wipe it with any of the myriad of free utilities, keep the hard drive. My missuses notebook died and I had no way of wiping the info on it before I sold it for spares. I sell used ones for a living and I kept the HDD. If I'd been able to wipe it, I'd have left it in. Still got the HDD so it'll get used in something at some point.0

Thats what I was thinking. Shame really because it's a Sony Viao.
Screen, keyboard, charger, battery etc are all fine. It's just something had died in it.0 -
If you're going to take the HD out anyway before you dispose of it, why not take it out and put another one in, and see if you can get the laptop to work?0
