In the process of buying a house but want to change the staircase,at the moment it comes down about 10 risers, then turns right and intrudes into the living room, this is to allow access into the living room via a door.
I would like to remove the door, block it up and run the staircase straight down without the turn,is there any regulation which says what space there should be between the foot of the stairs and an opposite wall,if you get my drift?

Building regs part k covers stairs http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/england/professionals/buildingregs/technicalguidance/bcpffpartk/bcpffpartkappdoc
Quick reading says that there is no specific requirement covering the space at the bottom but it probably best not be less than the width of the stairs.0 -
