Moving gas and electricity meters

I'm hoping to knock down our under stairs cupboard to increase the size of our narrow hall and realise that it's going to cost a packet to get the gas and electricity meters moved outside. I contacted SGN last year who quoted GBP643 for their part. I have just got back in touch with them as we're ready to go ahead and the price has gone up to GBP820! How can they justify such an increase? I'm sure it's not on wage increases. Has anyone else used SGN to move a meter? Nobody else seems interested in quoting for this kind of work. Is there any other way to get this work done?

For electricity the only person who can move the meter is your suppliers appointed meter operator. If the intake cable needs moving this has to be done by the distributor, this can be very expensive.

if you are talking about scotia when you say sgn you will probally find that some the increase is due to the increase cost of licenses for them work on street if it means digging - councils have increased these quite a lot recently.

  • I have the same problem - utility alteration services can only be carried out by approved contractors. SGN have just quoted me 979 to move our meter from inside our new extension on to an external wall - no more than 8ft - our drive has already been dug up by us and they have no need to go into the footpath or highway. The guy who came and surveyed it says it was a "quick and easy one" so why doesn't the quote reflect this???? Having researched alternative contractors it seems that there are none based locally to me, and in any case they are all aiming for the new build, multiple installation market and are not interested in minor alterations for the private householder!! Ooooh....I seem to have stumbled upon a gap in the market in East Sussex for a groundwork company/gas engineer!!!! Doesn't help the likes of us being ripped off though
  • Hello, I have 3 meters in 1 building and want to move them from one side of the wall to the outside of the wall. This involves a distance of 250mm. EDF/ Power Networks have said that it will cost between £1200-£1500 PER meter to move them...thats a total of £3600-£4500 plus VAT to move from one side of wall to the other. In fact they will actually have to shorten their underground cable to complete this. I am a bit surprised by the amount and wondered if there was a cheaper way of getting this done. Its Power Networks who are the contractors. Incidentally the girl on the phone was surprised that I actually wanted the work done!
Any help or advice would be very welcome
    regards

  • UK Power Networks are not contractors - they own the network in 3 areas of the country, South East, London & Eastern areas. They have nothing to do with EDF or any other supplier. Your electric meter can only be moved legally by the network company in your area.
