I too have a backyard, and started growing "stuff" last year. As well as pots and planters, I have a small plastic greenhouse, and I succesfully grew peppers (green and red), onions and shallots, strawberries, tomotoes chives and radishes.

This year i've done all of the above again along with potatoes and lettuce. All so far (fingers crossed) seem to be doing well.

Have to say the strawberries took off spectatularly, the very first one that grew to a decent size last year we took a photo of it before picking it (yes I know, I need to get out more!) and sliced it in 3 to share between us- it was THE best strawberry in the world :)

I don't think there is anything that you can't grow in a pot! The RHs has a rather interesting bit on container gardening

Our back garden is mainly concrete apart from a wild life area we've got at the bottom complete with pond.........think thats my favourite part.
The rest of if (other than one flower bed to the side which nothing seems to grow in except evergreen shrubs) is full of planters with all sorts of perrenial flowers, and some veg. Not a great deal but we've got a herb section, carrots, courgettes (fingers crossed), potatos of all sorts, french beans and tomatos and a couple of bay trees. We normally have some runner bean plants given to us so didn't bother to buy any but so far they've not arrived.
Love the piccys of your gardens..........oh I wish...........ill health and the bad weather slowed us down this year.......we're still 'clearing up'
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Last year we only had a small backyard, all concrete and slabs. It was our first year trying to grow anything, and it was all done in containers/pots. From what I can remember we did French Beans, Carrots, Spring Onions, Tomatoes, Peas, Cucumbers and radish.

Everything did extremely well and we didn't have any disappointments or failures. I'd say don't be afraid to try whatever you feel like trying... the worst that can happen is it doesn't work, and even then, you gain experience for next year!

If you're not already a member, try joining your local Freegle group: you'd be surprised how many pots and containers get given away for free, and there's always room for 'just one more pot' ;)

I have a tiny 'Coronation Street' style back yard. The bulk of it is taken up by my 6ft square chicken pen for my two ex-battery hens. I also have a compost bin, worm bin, water butt and two of those cheap plastic growhouses.

Currently I have three minarette apple trees, three blueberry bushes, 4 sacks of potatoes, 3 sacks of Jerusalem artichokes and two peach minarette trees. The peaches suffered from peach leaf curl so they haven't set any fruit this year. The apples look like they will be laden :T, as do the blueberries.

I have also hung up a hanging basket of tomatoes and peas. Tomorrow I am going to plant out more tomatoes and some cucumbers. When I have cleared the tomatoes out of the growhouse I will use that to grow my peppers in. I have also just sowed lots of lettuce and 'baby' leaves which will go into window boxes.

I also have a huge ivy and two huge climbing roses making bids for freedom into the bargain.

So there is loads you can grow in just a small back yard. The trick is to keep on top of the watering and feeding. This used to be a huge problem for me but since I got the hens and I have to see to them three times a day, I have managed to combine plant watering with hen playing. Plus I compost their poo.

However it is nowhere near as picturesque as the photos of other posters' yards in this thread! No matter how much I try to tidy it up, it always looks messy ..... I blame the chickens lol!
