Petrol - Supermarket vs. Branded

The biggest difference that I find when using BP Ultimate Diesel is that my car runs smoother & quiteer - I can't honestly fiind any additional performance (but I'm not a flat out driver anyway) and as for MPG, i'd need to do a 250 mile or so run to really offer an accurate opinion.

Have given up the idea of using Total this week - 92.9 per litre.
Sainsburys/Tescos/Morrisons - 89.9
It's a no-brainer.0 -
My local Tesco has dropped to 89.9 as has sainsburys :T No point going to esso which is still 95.9 :rolleyes:0

i drive a ford Anglia(yes i do) it likes high octane petrol full stop. it pinks like anything if i put tesco stuff in it and don't do as many miles to the gallon. on the other hand its 42 years old goes no faster than 55 miles per hour(going downhill) and you need 3 years notice to brake.
high octane 44 mpg Mr t 35-38 means filling it more often.
now my other car big daft auto merc gets 17 MPG around town 25 MPG motorway no mater what i put in it makes no difference to performance cos it goes fast and stops faster.
it don't care a toot where i get petrol from as long as it gets lots of it.At last I have a signature.0 -
I have a Peugout 205. Have had for 10years.
The person who owned it before me always filled it up at a Shell garage with 1 just-under full tank (£20 for 40 litres then - ahhh the days!!! ) of leaded, then the next 1 tank full of non-leaded and so on
.
I just filled it up over the years with whatever was cheaper.
I have noticed in the last few years that the car works bettter when I fill it up with Shell.
The question I ask myself is, is it the that the brands better now or the fact the car had gotten 'used to ' the Shell petrol.

can i mix the standard petrol with the super petrol (like shell optimax?) or would it be good practice to run the tank empty on standard petrol and then pump full of super petrol once in a while?
would it be good for the car and improve mpg? car is a 2004 reg 1 liter engine.
i am not after performance but mpg...0 -
Just a quick note on the optimax/super unleaded. It only actually works if your car has a Turbo engine. If you think it runs better in a non-turbo car, I'm sorry but its all in your head.0

Neither my 911 nor either of my BMW M5's are turbo charged, but I only use higher octane petrol in them, and yes, there is a difference in responsiveness.

Advancing the timing closer to optimum does liberate more power - I've got graphs that show it in a textbook from university.
I've now an astounding data set. Yes, 3 tank fulls. The supermarket petrol has actually produced slightly better figures so far when compared with Shell 95 premium. Yes, I know lots of other variables in there, but I was very very careful with the Shell batch, trying to eek a few more mpg from it. As the data set grows then I'll be able to draw proper conclusions.
My hunch is that I'll see no discernable difference.Happy chappy0 -
let me clarify what I meant. Yes super unleaded will work in all petrol cars. However, the only time when it will be noticeable is in a car with a Turbo. I don't remember what the site address was but, if anyone can be bothered, search https://www.tyresmoke.net and have a lil read.0
