Can I claim for PPI taken out in 1996?

Hi
As soon as I left Uni I set myself up as self employed and took out a car loan with Natwest. After a year I changed banks and they helped themselves to my savings to pay off the £8,000 that was outstanding on the car loan
Does anyone think its worth me taking up a claim for the PPI with Natwest, bearing in mind it was so long ago? Can I do anything about the money they helped themselves to from my savings account? They didn't tell me they were going to do that, so it was quite a surprise when I found out what they'd done!
Cheers

Hi there
I would first write a letter to complain in how they treated you and also left you short of your own money.
If they don't resolve or offer any sort of reasonable of compensating you or they don't put this right, then complain to the Financial ombudsman service (FOS).
In regards of the PPI, its well worth giving it a shot, if you still have the loan account number details then go for it.
You complete a questionnaire instead of a reclaiming template letter, the FOS recently issued these and you will find them on Stage One on the link below, further down the page, once completed, keep copies in case you need to refer to it at a later date - or even complain to the FOS, they have 8 weeks in full to respond, post within the post office - for your proof of posting.
Many have still been successful in reclaiming PPI from account in the 90's.

Good luck and please keep us posted.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"

Many thanks for that. I don't have the paperwork to hand (it's somewhere in the attic and I don't fancy going in there!), would a Sar be appropriate here?
Thanks again
